The Certificate III in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care gives you the skills to support Mob’s health and wellbeing at the Community level. You’ll learn how to work alongside health professionals, support prevention and education efforts, and provide practical care for people of all ages.
This course is ideal for those looking to take the first step into health work, including outreach, health promotion and clinical support roles. It’s a hands-on, culturally safe introduction to the Aboriginal health sector – and a strong foundation for further study or employment.
Who is this course deadly for?:
Mob just getting started in Aboriginal Healthcare who want to become a:
- Aboriginal Health Support Worker
- Health Support Worker
- Allied Health Assistant
- Aged Care Assistant
These entry level roles are often based in ACCOs, health clinics, outreach programs or hospitals in the City, Regional Towns or out bush in Remote Areas.
Course Details
How you will learn
This course combines classroom learning with real-world experience:
- Face-to-face classes and group discussions
- Practical learning and simulated health tasks
- Workshops led by industry experts, including Elders and Community leaders
Clinical placement
No formal work placement required. However, for some assessments you may need to demonstrate your skills in a clinical workplace.

Graduates may continue their studies with:

Course fees
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Victoria can access the Aboriginal access fee waiver – no tuition fees required.
Travel and accommodation costs may be subsidised through the AbStudy funding program if you’re eligible.

Entry Requirements
Below are the entry requirements for this course:
To enrol, you must:
- be 18 years or older at the time of enrolment
- complete a Learning, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment and Pre-training Review (PTR)
- have wide-ranging skills and knowledge about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of living
- have basic digital skills, including Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
You must also be:
- working or volunteering in a relevant role providing support to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, or
- working or volunteering for an Aboriginal health organisation, or
- able to access an appropriate workplace to complete practical assessments.
You may also need to provide evidence of the following documents:
- a National Police Clearance
- a Working with Children Check (WWCC)
- evidence of some vaccinations – including influenza (flu) and COVID -19.
If you’ve completed similar units or gained relevant skills through work or study, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer. Our team can guide you through this process during enrolment.
This training is delivered under the Skills First Program and may be free for eligible students.
Eligibility is assessed individually before enrolment, and tuition fees may vary depending on your circumstances.
